The ancient Greeks believed it could increase one's strength and protect against enemies, while the Egyptians associated the gemstone with the sun god Ra. Being 8 on the Moh’s scale of hardness, Topaz is considered a good gem for jewellery but should still be worn with care as it can be scratched and chipped if handled roughly. To clean your Topaz, soak in warm, soapy water and use a toothbrush to gently brush away any built up residue. High heat or sudden temperature changes can cause internal breaks in Topaz gemstones so do not use steam or ultrasonic cleaners. This birthstone’s colour is generally stable, however prolonged exposure to sunlight or heat could cause fading, especially in the yellow to brown gems.
