Unique Gemstones: The Tomahawk Tiger Sapphire
The Tomahawk Tiger sapphire is one of the most famous sapphires in Australia. Measuring 43mm long, this gem weighs nearly 83 carats. Found in the shallows of the Tomahawk creek in 1976, it's a very unique specimen as there are no inclusions and it is perfectly formed.
I was lucky enough to witness this gem on one of my sourcing trips. As I arrived at the Gemfest in Central Queensland, I struck up a conversation with the current owner and he casually pulled it out of his pocket to show me. The light displayed the green and yellow stripes that give this gem it's 'Tiger' name, and I was left in awe.
It's so incredibly rare, a really amazing find. Experiencing natural wonders like these is what keeps me returning to this area to seek out unique treasures.
