How to Clean Your Jewellery: Diamonds, Sapphires and Gemstones
Summer can see our jewellery exposed to many things it shouldn't be - we're talking sunscreen, moisturisers, body oils, chlorine, sea water and sweat.
Did you know that diamonds are attracted to these substances? Which can leave them looking dull, grimy, or with settings filled with dirt particles. If your diamond, sapphire or gemstone jewels are looking in need of a little TLC, follow these steps to give them the glow-up they deserve. Scroll down to see the picture tutorial.
Step 1: Place your gemstone jewellery into a cup of warm water, and add a squirt of dishwashing detergent; any brand will do. Allow your pieces to sit and soak for 10 or 15 minutes. Don't forget your earrings too! Gemstone earrings fill up with all sorts of debris which can minimise their sparkle.
Step 2: Give your pieces a gentle scrub with a toothbrush - we recommend a children's toothbrush, or an extra soft one. Remember to get right in under your gemstone settings.
Step 3: Rinse with water and dry with a soft cloth.
Step 4: Shine on, baby!
Some other ways you can care for your jewels this summer include:
> Don't wear your jewellery in the water. The main reason is the risk of losing it (we know of many rings which have slipped off in the ocean), but there is also the fact that chlorine and salt water can degrade the surface of gold plated or oxidised pieces, as well as cause damage to pearls and opals. When in doubt, leave it out.
> Store your pieces safely in a box when not being worn; especially if travelling. This will stop them knocking against other things and being damaged, meaning you get to wear and enjoy them for longer.
> Don't forget that we offer complimentary ring cleaning for the life of your piece. We also recommend an annual professional clean and check to ensure your settings are in good condition, meaning you're not at risk of losing a stone. Visit our Royal Arcade boutique in Melbourne to receive a complimentary deep clean.
